Useless in lecture halls : Livescribe 2GB Pulse Smartpen (APA-00002)

For folks like me who spend a lot of time in meetings and take a lot of notes: get one of these things and fast. Day 1: I unpacked it, played wiht it a little, and that evening tried it in a small conference room taking notes on a speaker-phone conference call with someone in China. His english wasn't great, and I found that going back and being able to listen (over and over) to *exactly* the place I didn't understand was a huge help. Day 2: went to an "all hands" meeting in the cafeteria with 5 different speakers. I used the headphones around my neck (as recommended), set the microphone for auditorium, and took notes exactly as I ususally do. Afterwards, I was simply amazed at how much more information I was able to retrieve, and quickly. An hour later, I'm in a medium sized conference room with 2 other people, using just the mic on the pen--again, fabulous results. Next meeting: a one-on-one, and I'm totally digging this thing. (as I said, I attend a LOT of meetings.)

If you ever have used a voice recorder, or have wanted to use a voice recorder, this is the gizmo for you. The ability to "instantly" recall anything you heard is a huge productivity gain. Everyone I've showed it to at work wants one.

The USB cradle (with cool magnetic catch to hold the pen easily) works nicely to charge the device quickly. I'd give the software interface a "B"--it's not bad, but a little awkward. If you think iTunes is logical, you might like this; I'm not quite in that camp. But that's just the UI side. What the software DOES is pretty amazing: plug in your pen, and all your notes appear on the screen, just as you wrote them. You can click through them and hear the conversation, but you can also SEARCH for words you've written. This works amazingly well, even on crappy rushed-meeting-fast-note handwriting. wow.

Recommendations: buy the 2GB version, and get a few of the small black notebooks--they're nice. Note: watch the series numbers on the notebooks--if you buy several, make sure you buy them with different series numbers. This is probably the only "gotcha" with this product, but it is much less limiting than it sounds. Then, snoop around your collection of eye-glass boxes for one that can hold the pen, the earphones, adn the USB cradle. I found an old fountain pen box that works great, so I can throw everything in my pack and I'm ready to rock.

This is an outstanding product at a reasonable price, that will make you more productive from the first time you use it...

Why Sony? : Sony Digital Reader Touch Edition - Red (PRS600RC)

Sony PRS-600BC ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector

Ok, where to start? I guess with the title of this review. I do not believe that this is your average Sony product because I was really expecting so much more from a company with their reputation. So with no further adieu, here's my take on the Sony PRS600 eBook reader.

My first impression was that this eBook reader really comes across in its elegance. So in this respect the pictures simply can't do it enough justice. This really does come across as something that you will want to be seen with in business and personal surroundings. I went with the more standard black version as opposed to the other options, but the red might not a bad choice for someone that either wants to push the envelope, or simply make a statement.

One of the features that I really like about this device is the multiple memory card slots. This reader allows you to store your data on SD as well as the more proprietary Sony Memory Stick format. This is a very good feature for someone like me, that has had Sony cameras in the past (that I no longer use), which allow me to utilize those old memory cards that I just happen to have lying around. Also, because there are two separate slots on the top edge of the device, it should allow you to populate both slots with the cards of your choice, which should allow you the added benefit of keeping work and play geographically separated, which is another nice feature that you will not find on many of the other eBook readers.

The menus, I found, are fairly decent, but I found them to also be a bit lacking. For instance, there's no way to adjust contrast on the device. My concern with the ability to adjust contrast comes from one of my more major concerns with the amount of glare that this screen produces. Granted, for some it may not be much, but for me it's been a bit too much. That being said, I've recently come across the "Sony PRS-600BC ClearTouch Anti-Glare Screen Protector", which I've just purchased. Too bad that I didn't know about this when I purchased the reader, as I would definitely recommend this to anyone that is going to, or has purchased this device. Between that and the "Sony Digital Reader Touch Edition Cover with Light - Black (PRSACL6)" this device will be almost completely perfect.

Since this is the "touch edition", no review would be complete without addressing this functionality. The touch functionality really comes into play when you want to either flip pages, or when you're using the zoom feature to move the page around (since when in zoom mode, the zoom slider stays on the screen and the viewed page will need to be moved around in order to view any information that might be obscured from view).

Previously I was fairly undecided about this device. I would have loved the larger screen of say, the Kindle DX. But after having looked around Amazon a bit, I also realize that there are less ways to truly personalize the Kindle, as well as far less accessories available to make the Kindle better or correct any associated short comings. Also, while we're on the topic, even though the Kindle supports more formats it does not support the ePub format, which means that unless you plan to purchase all of your eBooks from Amazon, you probably want have too much available in the terms of other eBooks via anybody else. In all fairness though, while the Sony does support the MS Word format in terms of the .RTF file extension, it does not support the .DOC file extension, which the Kindle does ([...]).

As for the software, a coworker of mine advised me that prior to receiving this device that Sony's been quite lacking on their development of the eBook reader software. His one suggestion to me was to download the free Calibre eBook reader management software (which I found with a simple internet search). So I use the free Calibre eBook reader management software and have had none of the associated problems that I've seen mentioned in some of the other reviews. Also, the Calibre software's functionality allows me to pull down free magazines and allows me to sync them easily with my eBook reader (for reading sometime later on). So if you're getting ready to hit the road, it's as simple as Launch --> select "Fetch News" --> select "Download all scheduled" and then just wait for it to bet pushed to your device (time depends on how many have been selected and they are available in different languages. So I download the German Spiegel online Magazine to keep my German skills up). The Sony reader software does not allow this sort of functionality, which is pretty surprising considering their reputation.

Final Verdict:
For what it's worth, this is a really fairly nice eBook reader. Fit and finish are top notch, it works as advertised, is very appealing to the eyes, and fairly easy to navigate. My one recommendation would be to purchase the accessories as mentioned earlier, which should also help to make your eBook reader experience that much more enjoyable.
Realistically, no eBook reader will be 100% of what "you" really want an eBook reader to be. The trick seems to be in finding one that will meet the most of the requirements that you deem are most important to you.

Update!: You will need to install the Sony software to read any eBooks that you purchased that are DRM (Digital Right Management...or something like that). I just purchased some books from eBooks.com and they were locked. I had to create an account at Adobe (software's called Adobe Digital Editions) in order to register both my computer and my Sony PRS-600 eBook reader so that the DRM content eBooks could be unlocked. I would have purchased the books cheaper at B&N, but they won't sell to the American military living overseas. So I'm' done with them!

STUPID WASTE OF MONEY!!! : Reusable Screen Protector for Blackberry Bold 9000

OK the most important thing to realize about this product - there are THREE pieces to it.

Sticker 1 side - flexible
The screen protector - hard
Sticker 2 side - flexible

If you remove Sticker 1 side first like I did, don't discard it (like I did). There will be two pieces there - Sticker 1 + the hard screen protector. Discard the filmy part with sticker 2 on it. Then put the hard protector + sticker 1 on the screen. Pull off the filmy sticker 1 part and you'll be good to go.

I've been at this for 45 minutes and it drove me nuts. I was trying to peel off the sticker from the screen - but that filmy part full of bubbles is NOT the part you put on the screen.

They need to include better instructions.

I gave it a 2 for the fact that I have a bit of air on one side where it won't lay flat, and because the instructions were not good. I see other folks here ad the exact problem I had. I'll eventually have to get another one because mine won't lay flat on the side. But at least now I know how to do it.

Solid Prosumer DSLR/Video Camera : Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only)

I'm in love with photography in general. I always have a camera with me and started shooting when I was seven years old. Nature, scenics, portraits, anything that is beautiful or touches me in some unexpected and magical way ends up in my camera. Along the way people noticed my pictures, asked me to take them for their special events, and since then I've been shooting portraits and weddings mostly for the sheer joy of it, having the good fortune of a day job that pays the bills.

For years I was committed to Olympus, and had a complete two camera, two wireless flash outfit with quite a few of their high grade lenses. But Olympus' recent focus on micro four thirds, a form factor that I cannot stomach and will therefore never own, their continued mediocre low light performance compared to APS-C sensors, and their announcement to the effect that they will not pursue any more mid-level 4/3rds camera bodies, pushed me over the edge and I started looking elsewhere.

So I went to a few camera stores and handled many different models.

I do not buy pro bodies, since I don't need anything that rugged and would rather buy the same sensor in a cheaper camera and spend the money an top-quality glass and flash units. I only had one pro body in my life, a Nikon F series back in ye olde film days, and it was also the ONLY camera that ever failed outright , something that dozens of cheaper Minolta, Pentax and Olympus cameras have not once done, even after having been handled rougher than the Nikon ever was. That was a lesson I haven't forgotten, and I've since not bought a pro body OR a Nikon ever again.

I'm not going to let the AF select what to focus on, so even a 2,000 - point sensor won't excite me. I just need one good, reliable, fast focus point in the middle, and then I do the old "lock focus and AE and recompose" routine which takes no time at all, certainly less than selecting an alternate focus point. The 60D has nicely lit, unobtrusive focus points, not the garish, semi-permanent black rectangles of the 7D. The focus is absolutely accurate and I have had hundreds of wonderful, sharp pictures in the month I've owned the camera.

I take the occasional picture and video from odd angles, so the articulating monitor - which is a thing of beauty, firm and solid and gorgeously clear - is wonderful for me. Again, a perfect "10" for the 60D.

I don't need 7 or 8 fps since I rarely shoot sporting events or wildlife that moves THAT fast. When I do, the 60D's 5.3 fps have so far been more than enough.

The out-of-camera JPEG's are great. I don't for a moment deny the usefulness of RAW, but again, I'd rather be out shooting pictures than post processing in the computer. The 60D gives me consistently pleasing, well exposed photos IF I've taken the time to adjust the metering and white balance according to the situation at hand. Auto white balance is fairly accurate but manual tweaking always renders better results, regardless of which camera one uses.

The viewfinder, especially coming from the 4/3rd format, is brilliantly bright and clear and easy to compose shots in even with glasses. I can see all the information and all of the screen.

The top deck controls are much better, in my own humble opinion and for my own personal use, than the dual-function buttons of the more advanced 7D, which I was initially set on buying before those same buttons turned me off. I want one button to do one thing, period. I enjoy photography, not rote memorization of multiple button press functions.

The grip and the texture are wonderful, for someone who when shopping for gloves usually gets the XL sizes. The controls are grouped sensibly, the menu structure is instantly recognizable even though I've never owned a Canon DSLR before, and it just makes sense.

Battery life is so good that this may just be the first camera where I can make it through an average day/shoot without having to worry about spares. Mind you, I do 90% stills and 10% video, and of the stills less than 5% are live view. So far, the claimed battery life of 1,000 plus shots seems entirely realistic. I've shot for several days and taken hundreds of images and it's not even half empty yet. WOW!

The built-in flash is excellent. It is more powerful and exposes subjects spot on at a much higher percentage of the time than I am used to seeing. Remember that if you're shooting in P/Tv/Av/M , you need to manually adjust the metering area, or you'll have some unexpected over or -underexposure. Which leads me to the intuitiveness of the Quick menu on the back panel, where things such as flash compensation can be quickly adjusted, a feature that I believe Olympus first introduced on the Evolt 500. I was very glad to find it here. Even so, next on my shopping list is one of the wonderful Speedlight units.

The thing I was most worried about when making the switch was whether I was going from a company with excellent high-grade lenses ( Olympus ) to one where all but the "L" series lenses were mediocre. I needn't have worried. I see no discernible difference between the vaunted Olympus high-grade glass I own and the 18-135 Canon IS lens, in most day to day shooting. Any differences there are won't be visible with the most minimal cropping in prints. I will, soon, add the 10-22 EF-S for wide angle shots, and trust it will also perform admirably.

When all is said and done, if you know yourself well enough to know what you realistically will do with a camera, and what the bare minimum requirements of a camera should be to allow you to do so without having to worry whether you're pushing the envelope, than you'll know if this camera is right for you.

The 60D just feels as if it is part of me. I understand it, and it does not get in the way of my taking the pictures I want to take. To me, that's what an excellent camera is all about.
